I've just been lurking and only reading the emails as they come in.
Obviously, some or you are doing in tough and others have come through with flying colours! Just thought I would make a comment as to how important it obviously is to love your dad and to tell him that!! I've got four older kids who experienced me at my worst in years gone by (one of them still hates my guts) but only one of them has done so and calls me "Dad"! The others never have and never use the word. I have asked them all to forgive me for who I once used to be, but it's never been granted - they even sent my wife "to Coventry" because she didn't give me the flick when things were not so good! So it's good to know that many of you are proud of your Dads - I would love to have my kids proud of what I am now! Even though everything has changed for the better and my younger ones and grandkids just love me to bits, the hurt is obviously still there for us. There's nothing on this earth more important than family!

This is very, very intersting.
http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s722384.htm Fundamentally, it means that, if we want to conduct genetic research into how PTSD is genetically transmitted, then we have to pay Pharmaceutical companies big bikkies. Not only do they own the product that cures or minimises the negative effects of specific conditions, they apparantly own the gene that may cause it. And if you submit your genes for testing, apparantly they own your genetics and can do whatever they like. Sounds pretty suss to me. I'd hate to think this gives them the legal right to clone me.

I have a question.
why do i get get funny looks from people when i tell them that my dad was a Viet Nam veteran? does anybody else have this problem? is the society we live in today still as stupid as they were when my dad came back and threw stuff at him when he marched through Adelaide on his return? have they forgotten how they stopped the supplies cause of the protests on the docks? Has Australia forgotten? and what about this next generation of soldiers coming back are they going to get forgotten about too? give me your thoughts people. this is one topic that i think we all want answers too Samara

I am going to jump up on my "SoapBox" (Ken get me down if you have to)
I visited the DVA site yesterday looking for updates on the Family Study and publish right there in the Veterans New (online) is a call for more registration for the Study from and I quote "The Vietnam Veterans Families Study Families can sign up now " The Vietnam Veterans’ Family Study is now recruiting. The study is inviting randomly selected Vietnam-era Army personnel and their families to participate––10,000 each of those who served in Vietnam and those who didn’t." To say the least this is some what discriminating the other Service cause you know there are 3. So are they saying that the RAAF and the Navy Personel are not as important or require no investigation. I would really like for all of our members that are Navy or RAAF related to please make contact with me as I feel the need to jump up on the soapbox directly to the DVA and tell them exactly how we feel about this. This is the reason that the study will never ever get off the ground!

I can't go to QLD to National Conference - I had 2 strokes ( 6 months ago 3 months ago) and but I wound have gone. can a get a tshirt? I'lll pay for it.
specialist 7 April and he's happy. mri again on 28 May - specialist too. is hard to speak and internet hard too - my brain sometimes not work - words, spelling, numbers, etc. is hard. 1-5 years recover specialist says. the drs didn't pick it up

My adopted son is 2 1/2 years old. His biological grandfather was a vet and exposed to Agent Orange. I am almost positive that my son has ADHD even at his young age. My own grandparents fought in the Korean war so I know nothing about Agent Orange. From what I am reading AdHD may be linked to this chemical in the grandchildren of victims. Can anyone help me out? I'm at wits end with my son. His anger and disobediance is almost intorable as he hits the younger children (1 1/2 years and 4 months) when he gets mad at us, his parents. PLEASE HELP. Hi everyone,
Well, the pocket money came through and I now have membership with the Australian Writer's Guild and my script is now registered with them. t's proving to be an expensive affair, you still have to pay for services within the Guild. Was wondering if anyone would have information on Grants for Kids of Vietnam Veteran's although I fear that I may be to old to qualify, but might as well try hey! Am starting a new job soon at KFC and will look at getting a copy to Combat Ken to read in the near future, so he can decide if he wants to endorse on this website, the more people know about it, the better chance I have of making it into a movie, even though I haven't the slightest clue how that is going to come about. My atempt at getting support from the DVA didn't go very well, I got palmed off about three times, so there goes that idea, although I have a contact of Dad's that I would like to approach further down the track. Anyhoo people, that's the update for now, any input would be greatly appreciated. Leenatouise :) |

Just a super quick FYI if you're looking for accomodation near Norths for the convention, Kallangur Motel is quite good. Please, if you can at all avoid it, do not stay at the Pine Rivers Motel. I actually live about 10 minutes away from Norths and drive by the Pine Rivers Motel to get there. May see some of you guys there.

Hi all!
Just to let you know, I have just sent of an email today to the DVA hoping to be pointed in the direction of the person I can send a copy to, hoping to get the DVA's support. Another lead is that I have been put intouch with the Australian Writer's Guild and am waiting for my pocket moneyfrom Mr Rudd to get a copy to them and register and get a script assessment. My youngest daughter has a boy of 7 who i love with all my heart (& would die for him for real). My daughter has bipolar and has trouble establishing any sort of relation with the opposite sex. What frightens me is that My experiences as a grunt have contributed to or are the cause of her bipolar, it is also a worry that this psychological problem I have has transferred to my grandson. What is a problem is that my flight or fight response is still very active even though I take medication, just recently a 28 yr old swore at me and grabbed me around the throat, my response (which I don't remember) was to give the guy a Liverpool kiss and smack him in the mouth on the way down. This resulted in my being arrested and after the trial being put on probation for 6 mths. Now, I have no memory of him swearing at me or grabbing me around the throat or my reaction to this, it is only due to a witness that what transpired came to light. Would this threat response be transferred to my grandson? Fors anyone know?

Hi All,
I'm just wondering if you have trouble healing after an injury or getting over colds & flu, etc. I know I do it takes me ages to recover all my friends get over something/anything really quick. And i think it getting worse as I get older and I'm only 34!

My name is Meg, i am the co facilitator (vice president) of Kids of vets NSW, we are a support group mostly made up of kids of Viet Nam veterans. My dad was a medic in 69 at Vung Tau. Would love to here from anyone from any where, please no we have bi Monthly meetings in St Marys and Campbelltown for those interested in coming along, just drop me a line, we wont be meeting again now till the new year, but im happy to field any questions you may have. G'Day everyone,
Ken's the only one on here that knows me. He should, .... I'm his dad. I'm a Viet Nam Vet. I was in 1RAR when it was sent to Viet Nam in '65 and was attached to the American 173rd Airborne Brigade. I'm TPI and suffer from PTSD. A couple of days ago, while visiting Ken and his tribe, he asked me why I didn't turn to alcohol and beat my wife as some other PTSD sufferers have. I told him that part of the reason was a nine week stint in the military hospital at Ingleburn in '66 with a dose of Amoebic Disentary and upon discharge from the hospital, was told not to drink alcohol for six months as it would cause a relapse.. Now, ... at that time the mates and I used to go out on Monday nights to celebrate the coming of Tuesday, then Tuesday night to celebrate Wednesday and so on through the week. Convinced that I knew better than the Doctor, I headed straight for the nearest pub, managed to get one beer into me before experiencing the rather explosive consequence of alcohol on a barely healed bowel and haven't touched the stuff since. And as for beating up my wife, I'd have been crazy to try that. She could beat ME up back then. Seriously though, ... I reckon that I was better able to control my mood swings because I was NOT influenced by alcohol. If anyone has a question for me, I might even give you an answer. Depends on the question. Rick.

I just wanted o thank the fella's from austraillia who served in nam. 2 dad's and an uncle were there with the usaf, army and marines, and each had the privilge of working with the "aussies". I remember knowing that in school during history lessons, when our teacher would throw a curve ball. (i had memorized a list of allies) . Once again gentelman, Thank You so much, as words cannot express my gratitude.
