Ken O'Brien

contacts - Inheriting the Vietnam War Legacy
Since 1984 Ken O’Brien has been involved in research concerning the health and well-being of the Vietnam Veteran Community. His studies have earned him prominent positions on committees and boards at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Returned & Services League (RSL-Pine Rivers), Vietnam Veterans Association (VVAA), and various other representative roles.
Much research has been conducted into the mental health of Vietnam Veterans. There is evidence that strongly indicates components of heritability to these conditions. Ken’s current PhD research investigates how this heritability is transmitted through secondary behaviours.
In light of Australia’s current involvement in international wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions, and the growing numbers of ex-service persons reporting mental issues, this research is vital. It also has ramifications on other sources of traumatic stress conditions.

Sapper The ethics of military leadership? 2 Nov 14 2008, 6:53 PM EST by Sapper

Is it counter ethical for a DVA to exist OUTSIDE of the Department of Defence?

Generals, as was shown by Monash, have a moral obligation to care for their troops, no? Do we as a nation construct a barrier for the Veteran, and a convenient excuse for the Generals by building an oligarchic barrier between the armed forces and the Vet as detrius of war, and hence permit, even courage alleged leadership to excuse itself of THEIR responsibilities?

When was the last time a general stood at the Press Club and advocated for his ex-Diggers? I recall that at the Agent Orange Royal Commission an infantry Warrant Officer stood and argued our case when the government (DVA) monies ran out and the QC quit - not any general!

Thoughts appreciated....
